Build it and they will come.

Birds, for the most part, are generally quite capable of finding the food they require to survive. However, they are not above taking advantage of some freebies that might be available. To that end, i have been generous enough to provide them, particularly all summer and for days ahead, with three bird feeders (all constructed out of recycled wood) and five bird baths(didn’t make those), spread across the yard so that they can swoop in for a free meal of sunflowers seeds, have a drink of fresh water and bathe when they feel the need to cleanse and cool down during these rather hot days of summer. We enjoy seeing them, the sparrows, finches, doves, wrens, chickadees, blue jays and redbirds (cardinals). The bird feeders get refilled every two or three days and the birdbaths are scrubbed (they get slimy) and the water replaced sometimes twice a day. The larger birds fly in and drive off the sparrows, who return at their first opportunity. Everyone gets to dip their beak eventually. There’s plenty to go around and a continuous group of freeloaders show up until all the seeds are gone. That’s how I can tell that it’s time to refill. No traffic. The neighborhood squirrels come around and occasionally I find that one has managed to leap from the fence, up to the feeder, not an easy feat, by any means. Squirrels have a way of being determined and creative in their methods to reach food. They feed, we enjoy watching them and everyone gets something out of it.
